In brief

  • Strategy (MSTR) led crypto-linked equities, up 11.95% to $103.58, while Coinbase (COIN) rose 9.05% to $159.47.
  • Circle (CRCL) added 9.44% to $78.50 and BitMine (BMNR) gained 9.68% to $20.05, tracking Bitcoin’s surge toward $70,000 and a market-wide short squeeze.
  • Strategy and Coinbase also rank among Wall Street’s most shorted large-cap stocks, meaning today’s pop may be squeezing equity bears too.

Crypto proxies in the stock market are staging their sharpest one-day rally of the summer.

Bitcoin treasury Strategy, which trades as MSTR, led the pack, up 11.95% to $103.58, while Coinbase (COIN) climbed 9.05% to $159.47. Stablecoin issuer Circle (CRCL) rose 9.44% to $78.50 and Ethereum treasury BitMine (BMNR) added 9.68% to $20.05, rounding out the move across Wall Street’s small cluster of crypto stocks.

Each one touched a fresh intraday high along the way, with MSTR reaching $106.90 (+13.07% off its open), COIN $165.74 (+12.37%), CRCL $81.22 (+10.10%), and BMNR $20.90 (+12.79%), before paring some of those gains into the session’s final stretch.

Each of the four are tied to crypto in different ways, but they move on the same lever: Bitcoin’s price. Strategy holds Bitcoin directly as its corporate treasury, Coinbase earns fees off crypto trading volume, Circle issues the USDC stablecoin and collects yield on the reserves backing it, and BitMine stockpiles and stakes Ethereum, which also reacts to Bitcoin’s price as the most important altcoin in the market.

Wednesday’s equity pop tracks Bitcoin’s own short squeeze toward $70,000, which liquidated more than a billion dollars in bearish crypto bets in a single hour. The U.S. Treasury also announced it would at least double the size of its long-bond buyback program starting in September, a liquidity-easing move that lifted risk assets broadly Wednesday with the total crypto market growing more than 5% in the current trading session.

The move also came within hours of a White House meeting where President Trump is expected to sit down with SEC and CFTC leadership and crypto executives to discuss market-structure rules, plus the Federal Reserve’s July meeting minutes, both due later Wednesday. Either event could add fresh volatility to the group before the closing bell.

Strategy and Coinbase carry extra significance here: both have ranked among the most shorted large-cap stocks on Wall Street, with Coinbase being currently the fifth most shorted stock in the financial sector. That means today’s rally isn’t just crypto derivatives traders getting squeezed—equity short sellers betting against these two names are being forced to cover into a rising market as well.

Strategy’s own numbers show why its stock moves so closely with Bitcoin. The firm held 840,447 BTC and $4.8 billion in cash as of its most recent weekly filing, making its share price function almost like a leveraged bet on the coin it hoards. Bitcoin has been heavily bearish throughout the year, making short bets seem like a “safe” bet.

BitMine tells a similar story on the Ethereum side. The firm holds 5.82 million ETH tokens, worth roughly $11.4 billion and equal to 4.8% of Ethereum’s circulating supply, chairman Tom Lee said this week, putting BMNR about as close to a pure Ethereum bet as a Nasdaq ticker gets.

Even after Wednesday’s spike, Strategy, Coinbase, and BitMine remain deeply negative for the year, with analysts split on whether the move marks a genuine turn or another short-covering pop inside a longer downtrend. Follow-through volume on these assets over the next few sessions, alongside whether Bitcoin can hold the $70,284 resistance zone flagged on Wednesday’s chart, will likely settle which read is right.
