Nashville Notícias reporter Estefany Rodríguez was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials on March 4, 2026, despite being in the United States legally. She arrived in the U.S. in 2021 and sought asylum after facing death threats in relation to her reporting in her native Colombia.

At the time of her detention, Rodríguez had an open asylum case and a pending green card application through her
husband, who is a U.S. citizen.

In court filings, Rodríguez’s lawyers have argued that she is being detained in retaliation for her reporting, including on immigration and ICE actions in the United States, as well as her speech more broadly.

Rodríguez’s case is points to a larger effort from the Trump administration to use immigration authorities to police speech. Atlanta-based independent journalist Mario Guevara was deported by the Department of Homeland Security last year after he was arrested while livestreaming a protest. Guevara was also in the country legally at the time of his arrest.

Below is timeline of Rodríguez’s arrest and detention, with information sourced from legal filings, and, where noted, news sources.
