In brief

  • DeFi Development Corp launched State of Solana, a free public dashboard tracking Solana price, staking yields, validator distribution, and live network throughput.
  • The company holds 2,294,576 SOL worth roughly $208 million as of August 10, making it the second-largest Solana treasury behind Forward Industries.
  • DFDV shares trade near $4.50, down about 16% year to date and down more than 70% over the past 12 months.

DeFi Development Corp announced the launch of State of Solana on Wednesday, a public data and research platform that pulls Solana market, network, staking, and ecosystem metrics into one dashboard.

The Boca Raton company was the first U.S. public company to build a treasury strategy around accumulating Solana’s native token SOL. It’s now complimenting its treasury with a free data product centered on the Solana network.

“We have spent a lot of time explaining why we believe Solana is one of the most important networks in crypto, but that thesis extends far beyond the price of SOL,” Pete Humiston, Chief Marketing Officer of DeFi Development Corp, said in the launch announcement. “State of Solana gives investors and ecosystem participants a way to see the underlying data for themselves.”

The dashboard tracks SOL returns across five windows, a “Rainbow chart” price history, live epoch progress and slot times (that measures token emissions and transaction validation), throughput in transactions per second, estimated staking yield and inflation, top yields across Solana DeFi, cross-chain activity comparisons, and validator stake distribution including the Nakamoto coefficient—the count of validators that would need to collude to halt the chain.

Everything on it is free. There’s no login, no subscription tier.

Humiston listed what he means by that: “Usage, throughput, staking, network economics, decentralization, yields, and ecosystem growth all contribute to the broader Solana story. We wanted to bring those signals together in one place.”

The numbers behind the pitch

The company held 2,294,576 SOL worth about $208 million as of August 10, according to figures it disclosed this month. That puts it second among Solana treasury vehicles—Forward Industries holds roughly 7 million SOL tokens, worth roughly $673.33 at today’s prices. SOL traded at $96.14 on Wednesday, up 23% in the last seven days.

The company’s stock price has not followed. DeFi Development Corp, publicly listed as DFDV, trades around $4.50 for a market capitalization near $140 million, down roughly 16% since January and about 72% from a year ago, when it closed at $16.00.

Its June quarter filing shows why. The company reported a net loss of $27.3 million for the three months to June 30 and $110.7 million for the six months, driven by a $72.5 million net loss on digital assets as SOL fell against the dollar and the firm converted part of its stack into liquid staking tokens. Quarterly revenue was $3.3 million.

Treasury companies trading below the value of their holdings have spent this year looking for a second act. Michael Saylor’s Strategy, which wrote the playbook on digital asset treasuries, raised $2 billion selling MSTR stock and set up a dollar cash reserve, then sold Bitcoin outright. Tom Lee’s Ethereum treasury company Bitmine has kept buying ETH with the gold of obtaining 5% of the Ethereum supply. Metaplanet, the so-called Strategy of Japan, has seen its own buying pace cool through the second quarter.

DeFi Development’s apparent answer to its struggling balance sheet is a dashboard telling investors to zoom out and look past the price of SOL alone.
