Dogecoin Is Getting Apps as DogeOS Opens Its Public Testnet

DogeOS opened the public testnet for its Dogecoin application layer on Wednesday, per its press release. A testnet is a trial version of a network, where developers test apps before real money is involved.

Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus created Dogecoin in 2013 as a joke. It works as a peer-to-peer digital currency. Since then it has evolved quite a lot, becoming a multi-billion dollar network, a social symbol, and a serious investment for some people with deep pockets.

Technically speaking, DogeOS wants to add what Ethereum is known for: apps. In plain terms, Dogecoin is the ledger, and DogeOS is an attempt to build the software on top of it. The team behind the MyDoge wallet founded the project, and it runs as a separate layer rather than changing the coin itself.

Its documentation calls it an “Application Layer rollup network on Dogecoin” running on a zkVM, software that generates cryptographic proofs—essentially math receipts—that transactions are valid. It is also EVM-compatible, meaning the self-running programs called smart contracts, along with the wallets and tools built for Ethereum, work there too.

Fees on the testnet are paid in DOGE, the native coin of the Dogecoin network. The faucet, a tap that hands out free test coins, gives 42.069 test DOGE per day on DogeOS.

The release lists teams already building. Superposition Finance is a lending protocol, where people borrow against crypto they deposit. Derps is a perpetual exchange, a venue for betting on prices with no expiry date.

DogeOS founder and CEO Jordan Jefferson framed the launch as a shift in what Dogecoin is: “Today marks the beginning of Dogecoin’s evolution from asset to ecosystem.”

“L1 ledger purity must stay intact while we introduce utility one layer above, and that is what DogeOS represents to me,” Timothy Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation said in a statement. L1 is the base blockchain, meaning Dogecoin itself.

That caution has a reason, because changing Dogecoin itself is slow. The DogeOS team submitted a proposal in July 2025 to bring zero-knowledge proofs to the base layer. Dogecoin has no formal on-chain governance, so a change like that needs contributor review, community discussion, security audits, and miners signaling they are on board.

The push to give Dogecoin more to do has context. Dogecoin has fallen about 75% since its all-time high and is one of the few big coins that is still in a confirmed bearish trend. That happened even as multiple Dogecoin ETFs, funds you can buy through a brokerage account, launched.

The release sets no date for a mainnet launch, the live version that would run with real money.
