CPJ, partners warn of press freedom violations ahead of Honduras election

The Committee to Protect Journalists joined 28 other press freedom organizations on Wednesday in a joint statement to express concerns over the climate of harassment, stigmatization, and threats faced by journalists and media outlets in Honduras ahead of the country’s November 30 general election.

The statement warns that high-ranking military authorities attacks, judicial harassment, digital surveillance, and administrative pressures poses a grave threat to press freedom in Honduras as assessed by a recent freedom of expression international mission formed by CPJ and seven other organizations.

Based on the mission’s findings, the joint statement presents six recommendations for the Honduran government and the international community, including guaranteeing press freedom and access to information, investigating and sanctioning attacks and threats, and including press freedom in the electoral observation missions’ reports.
