Berlin, December 1, 2025 — The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on Italian authorities to swiftly complete their investigation into the recent attack on the headquarters of the Italian daily newspaper La Stampa, ensure the safety of its journalists, and bring all perpetrators to justice.

“CPJ condemns the attack against La Stampa, which appears to be an attempt to intimidate journalists because of their coverage of the Israel-Gaza war,” said Attila Mong, CPJ’s Europe representative. “This attack marks a dangerous escalation in violence against journalists in Italy. Such acts of aggression risk having a chilling effect on reporting. Italian authorities must make it clear that there is no place for violence and intimidation against journalists in a democracy.”

On 28 November 2025, in Turin, northern Italy, about a hundred demonstrators broke away from a protest against a new budget proposal and in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. They headed to La Stampa’s headquarters, where around a dozen, some wearing masks, forced their way into the building, shouting threats — including death threats – against journalists, scattering newspapers and documents, and spray-painting slogans on the walls. Outside, other protesters threw manure at the gates and left anti-journalist and pro-Palestinian graffiti. The newsroom was largely empty because many staff were participating in a national strike themselves. La Stampa called the incident a “violent assault on our newspaper and information.”

The attack drew widespread condemnation, including from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who expressed solidarity with the newspaper’s journalists.

Police in Turin said they have opened an investigation and have identified about 30 suspects. They have also increased security for several other newspapers.

CPJ emailed questions to the Turin police press office but received no response.
