CPJ welcomes four eminent executives to its board of directors

New York, December 2, 2025—The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) announced on Tuesday four new members to its board of directors: Rebecca Blumenstein, president, editorial of NBC News, Gary Briggs, marketing executive and and advisor to notable technology and retail firms; Phil Chetwynd, global news director of Agence France-Presse; and Katherine Moran Meeks, executive vice president and general counsel of Fox News.

“I am thrilled to welcome four prominent leaders with careers in journalism, media, and strategic litigation to CPJ’s board,” said CPJ Chair Jacob Weisberg. “Amid spiking threats to journalists worldwide, I am confident that their formidable experience will prove to be a great asset to our team and the journalists we serve.”

Rebecca Blumenstein leads journalism and original content across NBC broadcast and digital platforms. She oversees editorial teams, newsgathering, field operations, Meet the Press, Dateline NBC, NBC Nightly News, and NBC News Studios. Previously, Blumenstein was deputy managing editor at The New York Times and deputy editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal. 

Gary Briggs serves on the boards of Etsy, Petco, Combe, and Omaze Inc. He is currently a senior marketing advisor at OpenAI. Previously, Briggs was Facebook’s first chief marketing officer, responsible for the company’s brand, consumer, and product marketing. Prior to joining Facebook, Briggs served in various roles at Google. 

Phil Chetwynd is responsible for AFP’s global editorial strategy. At AFP, Chetwynd has occupied the posts of global editor-in-chief and chief Asia editor, while also positioning the organization as a leading voice on information integrity and press freedom. He began his career in British regional newspapers. Chetwynd is a member of the World Editors Forum and sits on the advisory board of the International News Safety Institute. He will join CPJ’s board of directors in June 2026.

Before joining Fox News, Katherine Moran Meeks was a litigation partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP where she was focused on First Amendment matters. In addition, Meeks defended media companies and journalists in high-profile libel litigation and served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Alex Kozinski on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Justice Anthony M. Kennedy at the U.S. Supreme Court.

CPJ’s board of directors is composed of journalists, media executives, and leaders of related professions from around the world.
