I am here today at Bondi Beach, the scene of the worst terrorist attack in Australia’s history, the worst mass shooting since Port Arthur, and the deadliest attack on Jewish civilians since October 7.
Understandably, the mood here is profoundly sombre. A blanket of grief hangs over the scene.
That grief is accompanied by anger. Why? Because Australians have been calling on their government to do more to confront antisemitism.
The Prime Minister has said nothing as anti-Israel convoys have travelled through Jewish suburbs. He said nothing when Jewish students and academics were harassed on university campuses. He said nothing when Israeli hostages visiting Australia were forced to flee their hotel after being confronted by protesters.
Aggressive anti-Israel protests have taken place every weekend across Australia. They have been tolerated—and at times encouraged—by the political class.
At Bondi Beach, the prevailing feeling is one of loss. Fifteen people have lost their lives. But Australia has lost something else as well: its sense of innocence.
The kinds of terrorist attacks that once felt distant—events that happened overseas—have now reached our shores. There is a sense here that Australia will never be the same again.
