The Committee to Protect Journalists on Wednesday submitted testimony from Venezuelan journalist Luz Mely Reyes, a recipient of CPJ’s 2018 International Press Freedom Award, to the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission ahead of its hearing, “Human Rights in Venezuela: Status and Opportunity,” in Washington. Reyes, co-founder and editor of the Venezuelan outlet Efecto Cocuyo, drew on her firsthand experience reporting on the country’s sustained government pressure.

CPJ’s submission calls attention to the repression, censorship, criminalization and persecution in Venezuela, in a fragile information environment further strained by a pair of devastating earthquakes that struck the country on June 24 and the political upheaval that followed the U.S. capture of Nicolás Maduro on January 3.
