In brief

  • The Department of Defense launched a public website hosting declassified UAP files.
  • The Trump administration described the effort as an unprecedented transparency initiative.
  • Officials acknowledged that many released materials still have not been fully analyzed.

The Donald Trump administration on Friday launched a new government website dedicated to unidentified anomalous phenomena, or UAPs, releasing what officials describe as the first wave of declassified files tied to decades of UFO investigations.

The new portal includes videos, photographs, and government documents previously scattered across agencies or government classifications.

According to the Department of Defense, the release marks the formal debut of the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, or PURSUE, an interagency effort involving the White House, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, Department of Energy, NASA, FBI, and the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, known as AARO.

“As part of my promise to the American people, the Department of War has released the first tranche of UFO and UAP files for public review and study,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “In the interest of complete and maximum transparency, I directed my administration to identify and release government files related to alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena, and unidentified flying objects.”

The launch follows months of moves by the Trump administration around UAP disclosure. In March, the White House registered the domain aliens.gov, fueling speculation that a broader federal UFO archive was coming.

The existence of UAPs, the government’s preferred term for UFOs, has moved into mainstream political and national security debates in recent years as congressional hearings, military investigations, and testimony from former officials increased pressure for greater transparency.

Public interest surged in 2024 following a wave of drone sightings across the U.S., and Pentagon-confirmed videos showing unexplained aerial objects performing unusual maneuvers.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said the release of the new website is part of the administration’s broader push to increase public access to government UAP records.

“The Department of War is in lockstep with President Trump to bring unprecedented transparency regarding our government’s understanding of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena,” Hegseth said in a statement. “These files, hidden behind classifications, have long fueled justified speculation—and it’s time the American people see it for themselves. This release of declassified documents demonstrates the Trump Administration’s earnest commitment to unprecedented transparency.”

While he praised the launch of the website, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency would “follow the data” and “remain candid” about what remains unexplained.

“At NASA, our job is to bring the brightest minds and most advanced scientific instruments to bear, follow the data, and share what we learn,” Isaacman said in a statement. “We will remain candid about what we know to be true, what we have yet to understand, and all that remains to be discovered. Exploration and the pursuit of knowledge are core to NASA’s mission as we endeavor to unlock the secrets of the universe.”
