In brief

  • Crypto ranks as the most muted topic on X.
  • Politics and the Iran conflict follow.
  • Data points to fatigue with high-volume content.

Are you being shadowbanned? Is your engagement down bad? Well, if you spend your day tweeting about crypto or politics on X, your followers may just be sick of it.

Crypto is the most muted topic on X’s “For You” feed, ahead of politics and global conflict, according to data shared by the platform’s head of product, Nikita Bier.

The ranking comes after X rolled out its snooze feature earlier this month, which lets users hide unwanted topics for 24 hours.

“Today we’re also rolling out a tool to snooze topics on your For You tab—if you ever want to crank up or turn down the slop,” Bier posted on X at the time. The post came as X began rolling out a custom timelines feature.

Crypto tops the list, followed by politics, the Iran conflict, sports, and business and finance, with gaming, artificial intelligence, science and technology, and entertainment also frequently muted.

Responses to the reveal were mixed, with some posting, in typical crypto fashion, memes to cope with Bier’s post.

Others criticized the snooze feature’s impact.

“Or you could make it easier by just offering a single filter that allows someone to place themselves into a Truman Show-esque false reality of everything being totally awesome right now,” filmmaker Melissa Dykes wrote on X.

“No wonder my account interaction sucks,” Head of Growth at OpenAssets, Alexandre Lores, said. “I only talk about 1-5!”

Crypto ranks first in part because it dominates the platform, with posts about prices, launches, and speculation appearing around the clock. At the same time, politics and geopolitics ranked higher, pointing to fatigue with constant and often polarizing news coverage.

However, the inclusion of artificial intelligence and broader tech categories suggests the pattern extends beyond crypto, highlighting that the topics that drive engagement are also among the most muted.

The pattern extends beyond X. In 2019, YouTube removed hundreds of crypto-related videos and channels in a sweep it later said was a mistake tied to its moderation systems. However, creators reported delays in getting content restored.

More recently, in November, policy changes around online gambling sparked concern among crypto creators after YouTube expanded restrictions to include sites offering NFTs or token-based rewards. The company later clarified the rules targeted gambling promotions, not general crypto content, but the reaction showed how quickly crypto-related material can be affected by broader platform policies.

The ranking comes as X has made a series of recent crypto-focused moves. In January 2026, the company announced plans to develop “Smart Cashtags,” a feature that turns symbols like $BTC into links with live prices and charts. In April 2026, Bier outlined new measures to curb crypto scams, including auto-locking accounts that suddenly begin posting about tokens. Bier’s status as an advisor to Solana and a venture partner at Lightspeed Ventures suggests the changes are meant to cut down on spam and scams, not reduce overall crypto discussion on X.

Despite ongoing concerns of shadowbanning among content creators, the high snooze rate suggests users are reacting to ongoing shilling and low-quality promotional content that still slips through, rather than any official effort by X to limit or demonetize crypto.
