The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression is pleased to announce that Casey Mattox has joined our Board of Directors, bringing with him a distinguished career dedicated to defending the First Amendment and advancing core civil liberties.

Casey currently serves as vice president for legal strategy at Stand Together, where he leads efforts to develop innovative legal strategies and partnerships that promote a system grounded in the rule of law, constitutionally limited government, and individual liberty. Over the course of his career, he has built a reputation as a thoughtful and effective advocate for freedom of speech, freedom of association, and other essential constitutional protections.

“As a believer in the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, there is no greater calling than to ensure that every mind is free to believe and to speak,” said Casey. “FIRE is the world’s preeminent free speech advocacy organization, an unapologetic and uncompromising voice for free speech. I have partnered and collaborated with FIRE for almost two decades and witnessed firsthand this team’s principled commitment to liberty. I’m honored to serve alongside them.”

Before joining Stand Together, Casey spent years in litigation and legal leadership roles focused on defending the rights of students, faculty, families, health care professionals, and religious organizations. His work has consistently centered on safeguarding First Amendment freedoms in some of the most contested and consequential areas of public life. From campus speech disputes to broader constitutional questions, Casey has demonstrated both a deep understanding of the law and a steadfast commitment to protecting individual rights.

Casey joined the Charles Koch Institute in 2018 as a senior fellow for free speech, where he worked to advance a culture that values open discourse and intellectual diversity. He has also held roles at Americans for Prosperity, where he continues to serve as an advisor, contributing his legal expertise to efforts that support liberty and civic engagement. Earlier in his career, Casey served as senior counsel and director of the Center for Academic Freedom at Alliance Defending Freedom, where he led initiatives to protect free expression in higher education.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Casey is a frequent commentator and speaker on constitutional law, addressing both student and legal audiences on the importance of defending individual rights and maintaining the separation of powers that secures them. His ability to translate complex legal principles into clear, compelling arguments has made him a respected voice in national conversations about free speech and civil liberties.

“Casey brings both deep constitutional expertise and a practical, strategic mindset to advancing FIRE’s mission in today’s complex legal landscape,” said FIRE President and CEO Greg Lukianoff. “His lifelong commitment to defending free expression and individual liberty makes him an invaluable addition to our Board at a time when these principles face growing challenges.”

He earned his JD from Boston College Law School and holds a bachelor’s in government and history from the University of Virginia. He is a member of the bars of Virginia and the District of Columbia, as well as the Supreme Court of the United States.

As FIRE continues its work to defend and sustain the individual rights of all Americans to free speech and free thought, Casey’s experience and leadership will help advance that mission at a critical time for the future of expression in the United States.
